Fast go over of materials in Unreal. Where they live and how to create simple blockout materials.
A little outdated but still a valuable fix for the brushes and materials. At some point you need to turn multiple brushes into static mesh and eliminate large numbers of brushes overlapping.

CLICK on a face of a brush and click SHIFT + B to select all faces on a single brush or multiple brushes. This technique is still not a 100% fix for replacing all materials. It will miss many faces when selecting multiple brushes at the same time.
