We can no longer install extensions via Firefox because starting from Impish, Ubuntu's developers ships Firefox as a snap package instead of regular deb as per an agreement between Mozilla and Canonical.
Slow start performance (due to copying a large number of language packs during Firefox's first start) isn't the only one issue. A web browser installed as a snap can't talk to the chrome-gnome-shell connector.
This is snap limitation, so similar issue can be seen on any "snappy" browsers. It's worth to mention that Chromium package in 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa and newer releases repository is just an empty package that links to snap version.
Until this issue is addressed, GNOME extension not working issue won't go nowhere. You'll need to install GNOME extensions manually, which is not for everyone I believe. Thankfully, Canonical give its users alternative with Extension Manager. It supports :

- Searching
- Installation
- Enabling
- Disabling
- Uninstall
- Screenshots
Another workaround you can try is by using non snap browsers. We can always use regular Firefox which is always available on its website or simply install Google Chrome. Just make sure that you have "chrome-gnome-shell" installed.
If you got nothing happens after clicking the install button on very first attempt, try run the application from Terminal. For example, here's mine :
** (extension-manager:2): CRITICAL **: 01:00:47.977: GDBus.Error:org.gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._g_2dio_2derror_2dquark.Code36: GDBus.Error:org.gnome.Shell.DownloadInfoError: 6
Please correct me if I'm wrong, 6 is SOUP_STATUS_SSL_FAILED. This error can be fixed easily by installing / re-installing ca-certificates package as shown in my previous video. Check this out https://youtu.be/CFytfdNepUI.
