Ford F-150 | New vs. Classic | Autotrader
120Trucks these days have it all: Upscale interiors, efficient engines and serious off-road ability. But would you really take all of the technology of a new truck versus a 20-year old classic truck? We decided to compare one of America's favorite and best-selling truck brands, the Ford F-150. This is a look at a comparison of the all new 2017 F-150 XLT to a 1995 F-150 XLT to see where they stack up. We enlisted the help of Dylan Guiney and his beautiful 1995 F-150, and then decided to dirty up both trucks and have some fun.
We took Dylan's F-150 for a drive first. We did some light off-roading, and right off you immediately notice the bumpy ride. We should mention that this 1995 F-150 is in great condition -- it also boasted a lift kit and 35-inch Toyo tires on it, which are always a plus when off-roading. Some other notes about this 1995 F-150: It had the original paint still on it and roughly 157,000 miles. It's rated at 230 horsepower and returns an extraordinary nine miles per gallon. Overall, we enjoyed the rugged feel from the drive and we have to say this is a solid truck that's still very capable and appealing. If you like an old-truck feel, the 1995 F-150 definitely suits you.
Now let's take a look at the all new 2017 F-150. We decided to take the same off-road path as we did with Dylan's 1995 F-150, and you could immediately feel the difference in the suspension and smoothness over the bumps. The cabin was definitely more quiet, as you don't get any of the squeaks and cracking you do like a 22-year-old truck. The 2017 F-150 comes with a few engine choices. We, however, drove the 3.5-liter Eco-Boost V6 rated at 375 hp with 470 lb-feet of torque. New for this year, it's now paired with a 10-speed transmission. The 2017 obviously wins the mpg battle, returning an impressive 25 mpg on the highway. The 2017 F-150 also has some impressive technology as well. Our truck has the upgraded SYNC3 interface and some other innovative features. Overall, though, we mostly noticed the softer suspension and comfort quality of the newer 2017 F-150.
We enjoyed driving in both the 1995 and 2017 F-150 XLT's. The 1995 Ford is a great truck and a good place to see how far Ford has come in 22 years. The 2017 Ford F-150 is made like a truck in this day and age should be -- it's powerful, efficient, has really nice premium features and more than anything, it's tough. Then again, so was the 1995. So if you could take one, which would you choose? We will let you think on it, but for now, we'll take them both.
