The new 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV is a game-changing electric car that has both industry insiders and shoppers lining up for a test drive. This car is generating a lot of buzz, and for good reason.
Pure electric cars are nothing new, but the Bolt brings an impressive combination of both price and range, the distance a car can travel on a fully charged battery. Range is a source of anxiety for many electric car owners. That's where the Bolt EV really shines, delivering 238 miles on a full charge. That's about the same distance a gasoline-powered car can go between fill-ups. Pricewise, considering the $7,500 tax credit, the Bolt will cost about $30,000.
As for powering up, just plug into the 240-volt home charging unit at night, and by morning, the car is ready to go.
The Bolt comes in two trim levels: the well-equipped LT and the loaded Premiere model. Both use the same batteries and mechanicals to deliver an ample 200 horsepower. We also opted for the DC fast-charging option, which charges the battery up to 160 EV miles in one hour. This option costs an extra $750.
Inside the Bolt, it's surprisingly roomy. By placing the batteries under the cabin floors, Chevy created a lot more useable interior space. The weight of the subfloor batteries also give the Bolt a planted feel that you'll appreciate. And acceleration is pretty quick, to the tune of 6.5 seconds from zero to 60.
The Premiere's sporty leather seats, oversized touch screen and wraparound dash with ambient lighting give the car an edgy feel. And, there are a lot of creature comforts like front and rear heaters, heated steering wheel and an available Bose audio system, depending on the model you choose.
As for storage, the 60/40-split rear seats are easy to fold down, creating plenty of room in the back for gear and groceries. There's even a false bottom in the cargo area to keep some things out of sight.
If you're into the latest tech, you'll appreciate the impressive 10.2-in touchscreen along with the optional infotainment system for an additional $485. That also includes wireless charging and Android Auto or Apple CarPlay capability. Keep in mind, if you want all of the available tech features, you'll need to buy the more expensive Premiere model plus the Driver Confidence package.
Yes, the new Bolt EV is generating a lot of buzz, but with its combination of comfort, tech, incredible range and compelling price, the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV is definitely living up to the hype.
