Game Prices Are A Bummer These Days - TV and Lust
With the recent notoriety of highly publicized sales for copies of The Legend of Zelda nearing $1,000,000 and a copy of Super Mario 64 hitting $1.5m, a lot of folks have been more vocal with their frustration of vintage and retro video game prices. Even though big money has already hit collecting hobbies such as sports cards and comics, it’s not something we have seen a lot of in games yet. Even before wealth really hit game collecting though, the prices have been steadily rising over the last decade or so. It’s easy to feel gobsmacked, but we really shouldn’t be shocked that both outsiders and insiders are looking to make bank and might also be willing to shell out more than reasonable amounts of cash to get what they want. There’s no real villain here. While we may want to blame Youtubers for spilling our secrets, nefarious collectors who collect the “wrong” way and keep games sealed, or people with deep pockets disrupting our community, the truth is that gaming and collecting have both been steadily growing as hobbies for years. We’re just seeing the end result of increased participation and awareness. It’s a bummer, but it was inevitable.
