Garry's Mod - Metroid Prime Devlog - Spider Ball Stress Test
Hats off to Retro Studios for this. Recreating it in an efficient and generic manner was one hell of a puzzle. This is the alpha version of the spider ball. Interpolation will be added to smooth out the transitions around the corners but the results are already excellent. The whole system utilizes only three traces to determine how it should navigate. One for the "ground", one for "corners" and one for "walls". Each trace contributes to determining the best normal to use for navigation. The input system utilizes the resultant normal to determine how to apply the users inputs. The whole system is self balancing, no need for special condition checking, everything is done using vectors and some handy maths.
