Ah, Regular Show. Despite the intentionally mediocre name, it is actually one of the few shows from the new Cartoon Network that I actually enjoy. It has just the right amount of weirdness and style to separate it from other, truly mediocre shows.

Based on a Regular Show (and… another undisclosed IP), Ghost Toasters is a shoot ‘em up mobile game featuring all your favorite Regular Show characters, from Mordecai to Pops, and from Margaret to… uh… Hot Dog Guy: creepy smile, strangely amused, and with a sausage spring on top of his hat.
Yeah, I don’t know, either.

For whatever reason, Hot Dog Guy decides to help you survive the ghostly invasion, as apparently neither Mordecai nor Rigby know how to even run, let alone jump or shoot their bizarre contraptions. He serves as a very quick but concise tutorial to get you started in the game, and will accompany you through the night, giving helpful tips here and there to explain the game’s mechanics. For example, he explains that green portals allow you to switch characters, as well as award you a point every time you go through one of them. This is very handy, as each character has a different type of weapon, best suited for different situations.

Purple portals, on the other hand, grant you one of the unlocked characters to appear next to you and follow you close behind, shooting any enemies they can. At the start of the game, this means you can have both Mordecai and Rigby shooting ghosts at the same time, but as the game progresses and you unlock more characters, you can have up to three characters active at any given time (that I’ve seen so far).

Speaking of characters, here are the characters (and their weapons) so far:

Mordecai: he has a plasma rifle. It has a nice rate of fire, but it requires two or three hits before it destroys the basic enemies.

Rigby: he dual wields pistols, effectively increasing the overall rate of fire and basically creating a near constant stream of projectiles, especially if he’s shooting in a single direction all the time.

Pops: he throws lollipops at the ghosts; his attack serves as the shotgun of the game. That is, his attack packs a meaner punch, but is most effective at close range.

Margaret: she’s just a robin with a rocket launcher…

Another set of tips from Hot Dog Guy are the ones regarding the game’s power-ups. I’ve seen two so far: the Magical Keyboard flies across the screen, obliterating everything in its path (except for you, of course), while the Golf Cart allows you to (what else?) recklessly drive a golf cart, running over as many penitent spirits as you can, before the grand finale. The Pogo Shoes allow you to jump higher, but they haven’t been used so far.

Last, but not least, Hot Dog Guy will occasionally show up in-game to sell you his wares: boosts! These can range from speed, damage, shield, all the way to surprise boxes. All of these can be bought with pennies dropped by the ghosts after you put them back in their graves.

At the end of every stage, you will be awarded stars depending on your performance, which is measured by a series of goals that need to be achieved. The first star is always awarded for surviving the stage, while the requirements for the remaining two will vary from stage to stage.

As you go through green portals, you’ll unlock new characters, and you can upgrade their stats (critical damage, rate of fire, etc.) by upgrading them at the expense of a hefty amount of pennies.
