A playthrough of TTi's 1993 kaiju versus-fighting game for the Turbografx CD, Gozdilla.

This video shows two different plays through the normal mode. The first is played on the normal difficulty and ends with the true final boss, Super Mecha Godzilla. Beginning at 14:07 is the second play, done on the hard difficulty and ending on a fight with Battra.

Each of the plays through the game shows a different set of opponents.

Godzilla for the TurboGrafx CD (system card 3.0 required) is the localized American version of Godzilla: Bakutou Retsuden (Battle Legends) for the PC Engine. It had a sequel in form of the 1995 Super Famicom game Godzilla: Kaiju Kessen (also known as Godzilla: Monster War).

Alfa System had more than proved their worth to Hudson by the time that this excellent Godzilla fighter came to be. They were the people responsible for several of the console's best releases. From Ys I-III to Daimakaimura, Wonder Boy to Dragon Slayer, and later on, the jaw-dropping conversion they ponied up of Art of Fighting: when Alfa made a game, it was usually worth your time to pay attention.

Godzilla was no exception, and I'm amazed that this game is still somehow not better known. It's awesome! I'm sure being released on a nearly dead platform didn't help its exposure much in the US, but there's a good amount of depth here, and the control scheme is extremely intuitive and responsive. The game only supports the standard US 2-button gamepad, but the controls never get in the way, even though Godzilla has over half a dozen special moves in his arsenal. It really boggles the mind to think of the possibilities if all companies had managed to cater their control schemes this well to such a limited controller.

The basic premise is similar to Street Fighter II's, but Godzilla has more than enough pain body slams and nuclear blasts to set it apart from the crowd. The general flow of the game is much slower, but it's far from dull. The pacing of fights makes the experience feel much more deliberate and methodical than your average arcade-style fighter, and it feels entirely appropriate in context. Godzilla wouldn't really feel like Godzilla if he hopped about like Ryu or Chun Li, would he?

There is a huge variety of classic Godzilla rivals to go after the main game mode, and the versus mode allows you to play as anyone in the game (except Biollante) that you like, providing that you've unlocked them first. They add a lot of replayability if you get into playing it with a friend.

The entire presentation is pretty amazing. The Japanese gaming press loved this one for its attention to detail in the graphics and sound, and it's not hard to see why they were so impressed. The monsters all look fantastic, the sounds and screams are all sampled from the films, and the music is entirely faithful to the series.

I've also read on a couple of Japanese sites that the intro is a reproduction of a Showa-era film trailer. I don't know which trailer, but it is impressive that Alfa invested themselves so much in keeping true to the license. Funnily enough, the PS4 Godzilla recreates the same exact scene in its intro sequence!

It's a fantastic game, and if you love Godzilla, fighting games, or random Japanese cultural icons, this game isn't likely to disappoint.

(But seriously, in order to fight Super Mecha Godzilla, that score requirement is ridiculous. I don't want to think about how many times I had to start over before I finally got high enough to reach him. You have to score perfects in the majority of the fights to hit that 650K target!)
