The Jetsons: Robot Panic (Game Boy) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Taito's 1992 license-based platformer for the Nintendo Game Boy, The Jetsons: Robot Panic.
The robots of Orbit City have started going postal, and George Jetson's family calls him to let him know that they aren't going to take it sitting down.
The Jetsons: Robot Panic is a platformer that borrows liberally from other games, but in doing so, it sports a surprising amount of variety in its mechanics for being such a short game.
You begin the game with your choice of who to play as. Each member of the family has their own stage to complete before George jumps in to wrap things up at the end, and they each have a unique ability that they'll have to use to clear their areas.
Elroy can attack enemies with his ball throw at the Space Ball Dome, Judy can wear spike-resistant boots and invert gravity to walk on ceilings at the concert hall, and Jane gets a jetpack to use as she explores the shopping mall. Once the first three stages are cleared, George takes on the fourth and final stage, which is roughly as long as the first three stages put together, and he gets access to all of the items and abilities his wife and kids enjoyed earlier on.
Robot Panic is a fun game, but it is too brief and a bit too light on the challenge. The controls are excellent and all of the abilities make for some fun level setups, but it's over and done before it ever really gets the opportunity to stretch its legs.
It does make for a nice presentation on the Game Boy, though. The character sprites are good looking depictions of their cartoon counterparts, and the music makes solid use of the Game Boy's wave channel to produce melodies for some great tunes - it reminds me quite a bit of the style also used in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fall of the Foot Clan.
The Jetsons: Robot Panic doesn't quite have the substance that the later NES and SNES did, but it is a well-produced, fun little game that's better than the majority of its 1992 competition on the Nintendo handheld.
