Fatal Fury 2 (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Takara's 1994 versus-fighter for the SNES, Fatal Fury 2.
Played on the level five difficulty setting as Mai "Me Bouncy!" Shiranui.
On both the Neo Geo and the Super Nintendo, Fatal Fury 2 is a massive upgrade over the first game, offering eight playable characters and hugely upgraded graphics and improved gameplay mechanics. The sequel to SNK's first Neo Geo versus-fighter was far better equipped to compete with Street Fighter II than the original ever was.
Takara's SNES conversion doesn't stand up to the mighty PC Engine port, but it does nicely capture the feeling of the arcade game. All of the characters, backgrounds, and moves have been retained, and it plays smoothly.
It represents a much larger downgrade in its presentation from the arcade original than Fatal Fury: King of Fighters did, but Fatal Fury 2 was a far more demanding game (it was a "100 MEGA SHOCK!!" title, after all), so the compromises are understandable, however unfortunate. The characters are nice and large for an SNES title, the scrolling backgrounds feature tons of cool details, and the gameplay is actually sped up from the original. A fair bit of animation has been cut, though, and the audio has taken a major hit. Everything sounds so muddled and compressed now.
The AI is also *much* easier in this one, so if you find yourself endlessly frustrated with SNK's penchant for cheap bosses, the lighter difficulty level will probably be welcome.
Mai no longer seems to be at risk of giving herself a black eye during her victory pose, but as long as you can live with that, Fatal Fury 2 on the SNES is a solid port of a good arcade fighting game.
