▼More about Crash Bandicoot▼

Insane Dr. Neo Cortex has recreated N Tropy, Master of Time, in another mad attempt to take over the world. Crash Bandicoot is ready for them, helped by his sister, Coco, and his friend Aku-Aku. But Cortex has another surprise! He unleashed an evil from the dawn of creation onto the world, Aku-Aku’s twisted twin, Uka-Uka!

Compared to other games that we have played on this channel, the description on the back of the box seems a bit lacking. Where most games would describe the gameplay in some fashion (claw your way through enemies, jump over bottomless pits, solve fiendish puzzles, something something princess), the back of box description for Crash 3 simply describes the setup. It doesn’t even go so far as to talk about how the levels will be taking you to different historic periods, they simply explain that the big bad has summoned up the Lord of Time and let’s the in-game cutscenes take care of the rest. I am not sure if I view this as confidence in the product to sell itself and command its own story, confidence in the player to understand the mechanics of the game considering it is the third title in a series of a well known genre, or just laziness. Games were also focusing more heavily on graphical intensity at the time, and putting more and more graphics on the boxart left less and less room for descriptions of the game. If you look up this boxart, the description takes up maybe 20% of the space on the back of the box, smaller than the giant image of Crash and Coco on a motorcycle wielding a bazooka (did I mention that it also doesn’t make much sense?).

As I mentioned, this is a pretty well known genre at this point, and because Uncharted 4 has just been played by millions of consumers (dating this episode on purpose) even a new generation of gamers has gotten a taste of this style. You run towards or away from the camera while avoiding / killing enemies and jumping over pits. Because this is a PlayStation game, the level design is focused more on a particular corridor that you speed through, taking branching paths to discover secrets as opposed to the more open, exploration based worlds of the Nintendo64. In this particular game, the main collectible are the boxes, with fruits being an incidental reward that can be used to guide the player toward (or away from) particular paths.

In this episode we tear through the first World without too much issue - the levels are pretty straightforward by nature, and because we are still so early in the game very few of the levels require us to take secret paths or come back later with a secret item to unlock even more secret paths. The most trouble that we run into is because of an emulator malfunction (still working on getting that fixed), but luckily it isn’t something that ends our game early. At some point we may find something that changes my mind about this, but so far I do somewhat like the fact that the basic, core parts of the game are so straightforward that a strong majority of people who play will be able to finish it without consulting any sort of guide or outside help. It gives the player more confidence in looking for the secrets that *may* require some sort of help later when they have finished the main game and are going back.

The one aspect of this game that confuses me is the time trial. I understand it as adding another door to hide collectibles behind, but time trials by themselves have never really appealed to me as a player. Time to complete the total game? That makes some sense. Time attack missions where the entire point is to beat the clock? Sure, that sounds like it could be exciting if framed correctly! But beating a level only to unlock the ability to play it again but I am being timed this time? Why not just time me on it the first time?
