The perfect strategy... is NO STRATEGY!
*The monster ability and weight combinations here are beta and are subject to change in the final product*

The game is still technically a work in progress, so make sure to check out any updates on the kickstarter below!

▼More about ABXY!▼

ABXY a speedy, 2-player, simultaneous action selection game inspired by the legendary battles from our favorite monster training RPGs. With just 4 button cards and 5 creature cards each, you'll need wit, insight, and strategy to defeat your opponent.

I definitely see a lot of potential in this game, there are definitely some places that I would like to see some improvement.

The basics of the game are exceedingly simple - you get a team of 5 monsters and you battle it out knowing only the monsters' abilities and speed to deduce what skills you want to use in what order. You need to be able to read your opponent and keep them guessing while making sure that you are still doing damage whenever possible.

Each of the monsters has two special abilities, one passive and one related to one of your skill cards. Each monster also has a weight stat that determines turn order and a type that determines whether certain effects resolve during combat. This is one place where I think that the final game will be a bit easier to understand than the prototype. At the intersection of a few rules, the player is left to interpret how they think events will play out. And some of the combinations of abilities and weight... don't feel exactly balanced. The design team is definitely aware of this though; there have been numerous updates on the kickstarter and some have mentioned specific monsters that they already want to change. The monsters here are still being tested.

Learning how all of the interactions work is definitely the hardest part of this game. Our first game here took nearly 40 minutes, but our second game took only 20, and I am sure a third game would go by even more quickly. Once a group of friends already knows how to play, this game could make a pretty good way to pass time in between other activities. I will admit that there are a lot of pieces to any given game: each player needs to be juggling 5 monster cards and 4 ability cards, occasionally being able to maker ability cards as "locked out". You definitely need a flat surface to play on, making it a bad choice to take to an amusement park for long lines.

One other aspect to take into account, one that I think can actually be fixed on an individual player level, is that the game is built to be played by two people at once. I think that with more ability cards (ABXY), it would be pretty reasonable to implement 2v2 matches. The way I see it, if it can be done in Pokemon, it can be done in ABXY!

There's a lot of potential here, and with how well the team is handling feedback, I expect the final product to be a pretty faithful recreation of our experience when we booted up pokemon for the first time and took to the streets challenging everyone we saw!
