Episode One is the first in a series of games that reveal the aftermath of Half-Life 2 and launch a journey beyond City 17.

Chapter Information: Immediately following the climatic events of Half Life 2, the Citadel's Dark Energy Reactor explodes crippling the Combine superstructure in the process with Gordon extracted by the G-Man and Alyx trapped near the exploding Dark Energy Reactor.
Mysteriously, Vortigaunts then emerge and successfully rescue Alyx from the exploding reactor whilst also being able to free Gordon from the G-Man's grip who is not pleased with the matter and vows to get Gordon back under his service.
Moments later, Gordon is rescued from a large pile of rubble by Dog who has managed to journey towards the large chasm around the Citadel having rescued him and Alyx.
Reunited with Alyx, Gordon notices that the section of the Citadel where the Dark Energy Reactor has now been consumed by a violent red portal that dominates the skyline above City 17 and the surrounding region.
Reacquired with the Gravity Gun, Alyx, Gordon, and Dog use a nearby communication center to reestablish contact with Eli and Dr Kleiner who explain that the Citadel's Reactor Core will soon explode leveling City 17, and flattening the surrounding region, and killing anything left within City 17.
With no time to escape City 17 yet, Gordon and Alyx are forced to venture back into the Citadel to restabilize the reactor core and buy the Resistance time to evacuate the remaining Citizens and Refugees from the ruined dystopian city.
Saying goodbye to Eli and Dr. Kleiner, Gordon, and Alyx navigate the large chasm surrounding the ruined Citadel before Dog uses a Van to throw Gordon and Alyx back into the Citadel.
Entering the ruined Citadel which slowly collapses around Gordon and Alyx, the duo navigate the decaying structure, sneaking past scattered Combine Soldiers and Combine Elites who frantically try to escape the Citadel.
After coming into contact with Combine Advisors for the first time, Gordon ends up reacquiring the Super Gravity Gun and once again uses the improvised weapon to take down remaining Combine Soldiers and Combine Elites that try to stop them from heading deeper into the Citadel.
Eventually, Gordon and Alyx manage to find the entrance into the Citadel's Reactor Core located in the deepest parts of the Citadel's superstructure.
