When I played through Halo for the first time in 2003 I was disappointed by the general lack of detail in the level design (especially compared with the PC-exclusive shooters I was used to at the time), but to the game's credit many of the combat encounters are intense enough that the environments themselves sort of fade into the background. Also, the sheer size of the levels is still rather impressive and contributes to that larger-than-life atmosphere which defines Bungie's idiosyncratic shooter series.
