Hands of Necromancy demo first playthrough(s)
1This ended up being 2 playthroughs, due to an update that rendered my save files inoperable. That probably ended up being a good thing so I could experience the adjustments from the beginning. In the interest of sharing my true first impressions, I've included both my really-first-but-incomplete playthrough as well as the subsequent full playthrough in this video (the latter starts at 3:12:20).
This game does an excellent job at channeling Hexen - if anything, it might do _too_ well at that in terms of its puzzle elements. Fortunately, the game provides an objective list to help keep track of the various forms of progression needed in each hub - although this can also be seen as maybe a bit of a spoiler, as it may inform you of key items you don't even know exist yet. I'd argue that while that may make it imperfect, it's overall worth it, as it also helps to convey which items don't have other prerequisites to get you started.
This game also nails the Heretic/Hexen vibe in various other respects, including the graphics, all-new enemies and weapons, and especially the soundtrack. I will say I'm still not entirely sold on the tornado spell as it feels unpredictable as to whether it will strike its target full-force and carry it back with it.
At any rate, there's a lot of solid work in this game, and I'm definitely interested in playing the full version eventually (and it releases rather soon, about a week from this posting).
