Pak Attack: Func Map Jam 6: Fire and Brimstone (2015) [BQTN 141 | PC w/ Quakespasm]
0The sixth Func Map Jam finally sees an expanded roster of mappers once more, with the return of many familiar faces to participate in what is arguably more of a Doom-oriented theme (and indeed, Doom textures made their way into several of the maps).
While many of the maps had cool environments fitting the theme, this time I felt that Daz's was probably the most outstanding considering its design and gameplay overall. I also appreciated Scampie's map in particular for surprising me by bringing in Rubicon 2 textures (and a surprisingly unorthodox and rude Floyd cameo...).
There were several other interesting maps. Ionous' later went on to become an Arcane Dimensions map (Per Aspera Ad Inferi); Matecha's map had cool environment ideas but was tragically short; ItEndsWithTens' map was a super interesting but sparsely-populated adaptation of artwork.
I expected a lot of EricW and Tronyn's map, and it certainly is ridiculously ambitious and expansive for something made within the time constraints of a map jam (assuming it didn't involve previous work like Tronyn's map in the 3rd jam), but it involved a lot of absurdly-scaled structures and blown-up textures which felt super off-putting to me.
