Hellbound (Doom II) with Final Doomer+ and Voxel Doom (GzDoom) playthrough Part 1
Whew, what a title. This wasn't the game I'd intended to play. The game I had intended, Call of Duty 2, would crash whenever OBS picked it up. This is, of course, AFTER testing it the night before to make sure it was working. So I had to scramble for a back-up game and... here we are. Doom II.
Well, more than Doom II. Specifically, I wanted to showcase a handful of mods. Voxel Doom recently came out and made news. It's not the first attempt at 3D Doom, there's been several polygon models dating back almost as far as the source ports. And those models... never looked good. They were made back in the days of Quake 1 and 2, before models really could compare to the sprites for sheer quality. And I never really saw them get updated, even as the tech has improved. But voxels, this wasn't really done before, and certainly not to this degree. Voxels are basically just 3D pixels. Which is a perfect match for a game like this as you can just match the sprites as best you can with the directions. It still takes a lot of work from there, but it makes them look a lot more authentic to the original, and lets them fit in better. As a bonus, there's code from Shadow Warrior, the old Build engine game that has Voxels even way back then, to display these in software mode as well. For the real 'authentic' experience. I love them, they look great.
But I wanted to showcase more than just that mod. So it was the perfect time to bust out a couple other mods I'd been wanting to try. First, Final Doomer. A weapon mod that had multiple weapon sets, themed to match several map packs. So I grabbed one of those map packs - Hellbound - and threw the whole thing together. Combine it with a couple utility mods I just use by default anymore - Target Spy and Universal Damage Numbers, and we get Doom with a bit more variety than we're used to.
Hellbound is a much more recent map pack than the things in the DOOOOOOM Files. It's build with the modern engines in mind. A lot more detail, and a lot more enemies available. Things that would crash the original game, run it out of memory. But it lets there be a lot more detail, and larger maps. The maps are gorgeous as well. Huge, well detailed, good use of the default textures. It's a blast to play so far, and I look forward to continuing. -- Watch live at https://www.twitch.tv/the_nametag
