17With the speedrun trip out of the way, time for me to take the reskin pack for a more long trek kind of spin. I did do more than just the fists reskin, after all.
This mapset has a fascinating history. It's one of those mapsets that gets occasional reduxes every other several years from the devs, making vast changes all over that'll throw off veterans of the original as more things gets added or replaced. I don't mind changes myself, being used to HDest changing to different creatures with each passing year.
Unfortunately, the last one didn't exactly click with me. Compared to the original, the remastered edition weighs about +400MBs compared to the original's 14MBs. That's because the mod now contains an entire boatload of hires textures! Can't find any options to turn them back to the original. It was too much!
Suffice to say, it didn't quite fit anymore with my current setup. The visual consistency is garbled with my lowres reskins, and that just won't do. Decided then to run the original instead of the remastered. It may no longer have the neat updates and level architecture that the newer one has, but atleast my mod setup won't look out of place with the environment.
Even stranger, when I was cobbling the mod list for this one, I could not for the life of me find anyone that's hosting the original version anymore. The idgames archive version of the original is completely sandblasted and replaced with this one! I feel like that's a bit unfortunate, since now it's nearly impossible to find the original (heck, I wasn't even sure for a while if my version is the original, but I think I remember the Gold one having different skies, so I'm going with that). Decided to put it up somewhere so it won't be lost to the void of the 'net.
