How I See some Basics for 3D Shading with Basic 3D Models - 2023 - Self Reference Notes
Hi there internet traveler!
This is possibly going to be the last video of this series. This one talks about shading.
Previous videos from this series:
Overlapping 3D Model Baking Fix: https://youtu.be/auG0ffy-zv0
Material IDs, how I understand and use them: https://youtu.be/G9KhVGOeki4
A useful test to possibly understand Lightmaps in Unreal: https://youtu.be/IsCwaMd_Iws

My basic workflow for 3D UV Unwrapping: https://youtu.be/B26hExyVA2o
For this one, I show what I know about shading for 3D models. I show examples and explore shading like Flat, Smooth and Auto_Smooth. Plus, I show what the weightednormal modifier does and what it looks like in conjunction with Auto_Smooth and the Bevel modifier.
In this also I show how, from the little I know. How to spot and/or troubleshoot potential shading issues in the viewport through a preview material [MatCap].
The video also starts with a quick exercise or example of an issue I run into. This may help to spot what shading may look like in for example Unreal. From there we troubleshoot and by then one may have a very basic understanding of what this kind of stuff is and where we may be.
I also show a template with basic 3D primitives and the different basic shading techniques I know exist.
The video ends with two workflows and examples of the making of two 3D models. One by using addons BoxCutter and HardOps by TeamC and the second by using a standard workflow that uses TexTools for material IDs.
All in all, I hope this helps someone. This is stuff that I know my younger self would have loved to see as it is when I was learning about this stuff. If it helps someone out there. I am happy :]
AMAZING BLENDER ADDONS I USED:
TexTools:
TexTools amazing free blender addon: https://blender-addons.org/textools-addon/
Credits, citing: “The popular addon is developed by renderhjs and SavMartin ported it over to Blender 2.8.”
HardOps and BoxCutter Bundle by TeamC: https://blendermarket.com/products/hard-ops--boxcutter-ultimate-bundle
Note: the bundle is not necessary to digest the contents or basics of this video since I show that this can apply to anything, a basic workflow too without the addons. But if you can afford these addons at some point. Buy them. WELL WORTH THE PRICE. These addons are a-m-a-z-i-n-g. Especially if you are into hard_surface or sci_fi stuff, which I am. I for example love Star Wars stuff or the 3D art from DOOM.
Video Basics: This is mostly stuff that took me years or months of experimentation, game-mod making, school or learning around, self-teaching to get to the point in which I am. Today, there are so many amazing resources out there for free that you can get and easily learn more about this stuff. This knowledge is not rare, it is pretty common and basic. But I wanted to show these because they include also troubles, I ran into during my journey that may possibly help someone out there. Seeing something like what I am putting in this video years ago, would have benefitted me greatly.
With this said. Some notes:
These videos are not really tutorials. I am not a teacher or want to be, sorry. But I have lots of respect for anybody that is a teacher. It doesn't look easy. I am making self-reference notes, and I wanted to share these here because these may possibly help someone out there or may have some potential value to anybody looking into this stuff.
Special thanks to anybody that taught me the basics and about this, worked or shared with me their tips, tricks and knowledge too all the way back since 2007. Also special thanks to people that make resources, tools, software, anything about this. I enjoy 3D so I keep learning more stuff from time to time. Special thanks to family and friends.
Note: Some information in this video may be outdated in the future or wrong. I am also always open to constructive feedback if you have anything to share. If you are an expert and see that the information, I am sharing is bad, wrong or misleading. Please do not doubt to point that out. I do not want to mislead people or put them in the wrong path. If I did that, it is unintentionally, and I apologize in advance.
