My Basic Workflow and How I understand Material IDs - Basic Example - 2023 - Self-Reference Notes
Hello from the future traveler! If you stumbled upon this video, it is because you are uhmmm a subscriber, possibly lost or highly likely are or is learning about 3D stuff!
this is a video about material_IDs for 3D modeling/texturing. I had some issues with my 3D models that involved not knowing this process back then and at some point, I had to learn it. At some point too at the end or around the end of 2021, I did lots of experimentation on my own to reach a somewhat basic workflow that made sense to me and could apply for any future work as some sort of recipe. The overall process is not complicated after the first time it is done. What confused me at the beginning was understanding where those materials were used if in the low or high poly. It was a bizarre thing for me at the beginning to digest. I once had an interview for my portfolio review back in around Spring of 2021 and this issue was one of my biggest weaknesses. It was somewhat noticeable in the 3D model, but at the time of checking my texture maps, it was definitely noticeable. Thanks to interviewers for pointing this out! I learned a lot from your feedback, and it helped me big time.
The video is split in two:
0:00 - 2:28 - 1) The basic method and explanation
2:29 - 4:26 - 2) [Optional] Some extras that include timelapse of video contents and entire 3D model example making all the way to baking and texturing while using material_IDs
Tools used:
Blender
Blender Free Addon TexTools

Substance Painter 2021
Extra: If you run into overlapping baking issues/artifacts or want to check out how to fix them. I have a small video showing how I understand that too while sharing the workflow I use to do that: https://youtu.be/auG0ffy-zv0
It is one of these things I need to have today in my toolset yes or yes. I made this video for me and to share it here too. It is not really a tutorial. I need/want to have this as self-reference notes in case I stop doing 3D for a while in the future. If I get back to it, I may need to watch this video. The thing is, I made this as for how I specifically understand it. I strongly believe there may be other people like me out there that may be looking for some notes like this. I am sharing it here thinking like that, something that my younger self would have love to have around to understand this better. I am not a 100% the fastest or smartest, so some stuff takes me awhile to learn. While I saw tutorials about this and videos, documentation, it helped a lot. [Special thanks to anybody that makes or made these!] But this is kind of how I would have liked to see it back then.
This includes how I understand this process today 1/14/2023. It may include mistakes. It may not be the best either, take it as like if you took some peer or bud study notes. This method also may be outdated in the future. Something super important. I am not an expert in the field.
I understand that we all are different and learn at different pace. What worked for me, may not work for you, but I hope these two videos help you somehow and awake in you something, so you get the keys to the Lambo for basic 3D stuff or at least some pointers as to where to go next hopefully. I know how frustrating it is when things do not work out. Keep practicing and have fun! That is the most important thing :].
As for feedback or anything. I am always open to feedback, especially constructive feedback. Just be nice please if you can.

Special thanks to family & friends & anybody that made or makes YouTube videos about this. These helped tremendously to develop this workflow. Where it may be basic and not too much, it is honest work. Special thanks to my prof. at the time Fall of 2019 or so, Nawaf for recommending and suggesting me Blender and TexTools. If you ever read this, thank you Nawaf! :)
As for TexTool credits. It looks tricky, I am going to cite what the page I linked above says. Citing: "The TexTools addon is an extensive set of tools in one addon for working with UV’s and Textures. The popular addon is developed by renderhjs and SavMartin ported it over to Blender 2.8. It has size tools, UV Layout tools, UV selection tools and Texture baking. The list of feature is so big that I can only describe it briefly in this article."

Super amazing free addon. I use it every time.
Thanks for watching and have a great day!
