Unreal Engine 4.26 Lightmap Resolution Quick Test - This may help you to see what lightmaps do/are
Hi there internet traveler!
I made this quick test to hopefully help someone out there that has issues understanding what lightmaps are or do very quickly. Back then this stuff confused me big time. The documentation and YT videos helped a lot, but this is today how I would have liked to see them.

Note: This is not a tutorial, more like a test to see stuff in-engine. Kind of like a demonstration of what it looks like using it in a daily, crude, indie-like manner. I am not a AAA professional or expert in the field.
Again, I am not an expert, and I am still learning about this stuff. But I am sharing stuff that works for me. This is only a method of many, and I am always open to learn new stuff and improve in order to get better results.
3D models made by me in Blender around the end of 2022 or so and textured in Substance Painter. The models I made for modular practice, but while making this small level/area to see how everything connected, I stumbled upon this specific example, and I just had to share it. I just had an "aha!" moment and realized something like this was what I needed back then when I was learning the basics of this stuff. At least as an intro to be able to see where I was going or getting myself into. Test made in Unreal Engine 4.26.2 was used for this quick test.
In a nutshell. The way I see lightmaps now are kind of like an extra texture that has light or shadow information on it. Kind of like your high to low poly bake method. I see it kind of like a kinder egg wrap for your 3D model that sticks this light data to your UV Channel.
If this is wrong or something, feel free to give feedback, especially constructive feedback. I do not want to mislead people or show them wrong things/stuff. But if you can, please be nice. I am also learning too. Thanks!
I did not put audio or anything to make it easier to focus.
Special thanks to family and friends, and anybody, peers, teachers and kind online strangers and friends that taught me the basics years ago and people that make awesome resources like YouTube videos about this. All of this helped big time to be able to make a video like this while shaping my skills. It took me years to get here and understand it the way I kind of do now. I am not the fastest or smartest, so some stuff takes me awhile to learn.
I just hope this somehow helps someone out there. Cheers!
