Unreal Engine 4.26 Lightmap Resolution Quick Test - This may help to see what lightmaps do - Long V1
Hi there internet traveler!
This is the short version [YT Short]: https://youtube.com/shorts/URL1uIWRgzY
0:00 - 0:52 - The lightmap test
0:53 - 2:50 - Extras: Building 3D Models, Texturing and Quick Area plus notes
It is pretty much the same, a quick crude lightmap test showing different resolutions I wish I had around back then specifically like this when I was starting to learn about this stuff. But I included some extras too on this one versus the short with notes for self-reference. The extras are how I built the 3D models, textured them and then made the quick area in Unreal Engine 4.26. These extras may be helpful to someone possibly and also may serve to me for self-reference in the future. The video is also slightly longer and tweaked a little bit in some areas versus the short.
As for much of the information. I am continuously learning so stuff may be either wrong or outdated for the possible future or even now. Take it as like if you took some notes from your peer or bud.
Note: This is not a tutorial, more like a test to see stuff in-engine. Kind of like a demonstration of what it looks like using it in a daily, crude, indie-like manner. I am not a AAA professional or expert in the field.
For feedback, always open to constructive feedback if you want to share. Thanks! - If you want a reply and I do not reply though, it means I may not be available but will do hopefully as soon as I can if needed. Very important. If the information I am sharing is wrong/bad. Please do not doubt to point that out. But please give pointers as to where to look for the right information. I do not want to mislead people or share bad information that can potentially hurt someone progression or making them feel more lost than they are. I hope I am providing some good/valuable information. It is mostly stuff I learned in many different ways, but mostly by lots of experimentation or by going through lots of failure. What I am doing in the video, took me a lot of time to be able to somewhat understand/see and do in a practical/recipe like manner like how I am showing it. I stumbled upon this example by accident while I was doing the practice session to do the assets you see in screen. I just had to share it. I was practicing modular asset kit making. Understanding some of these topics was quite hard for me.

Video that helped me a lot! I remember this is the channel where I learned the corner pivot placement. I strongly believe it is.

Special thanks to family, friends and you. Also, anybody that taught me and shared/worked with me the basics years ago in order to shape my skills. Also special thanks to people that make YouTube videos or any resources about this stuff. They helped me greatly. Same with people that post in forums and info online. I am usually a reader of that stuff when I seek answers.
If you watch my content, thanks for watching! and have a great day! While this helps me too because they are mostly self-reference videos/notes, if it helped someone out there, I am happy. That is why I am sharing these. But again, take them with a grain of salt. I am no expert.
From my short YT desc:
I made this quick test to hopefully help someone out there that has issues understanding what lightmaps are or do very quickly. Back then this stuff confused me big time. The documentation and YT videos helped a lot, but this is today how I would have liked to see them.
Again, I am not an expert, and I am still learning about this stuff. But I am sharing stuff that works for me. This is only a method of many, and I am always open to learn new stuff and improve in order to get better results.
3D models made by me in Blender around the end of 2022 or so and textured in Substance Painter. The models I made for modular practice, but while making this small level/area to see how everything connected, I stumbled upon this specific example, and I just had to share it. I just had an "aha!" moment and realized something like this was what I needed back then when I was learning the basics of this stuff. At least as an intro to be able to see where I was going or getting myself into. Test made in Unreal Engine 4.26.2 was used for this quick test.
In a nutshell. The way I see lightmaps now are kind of like an extra texture that has light or shadow information on it. Kind of like your high to low poly bake method. I see it kind of like a kinder egg wrap for your 3D model that sticks this light data to your UV Channel.
