How many portraits does it take to become "good" at painting? 200? 500? According to an interesting blog post I read, a professional portrait artist was advised by his teacher that it takes 1000 paintings to be ready for commission work. So, according to the post, he did exactly that within a few years and then off he went. I'm approaching 200, so I've got a long way to go to get to that level. But I feel like even at my count, I've really seen substantial improvement. This video explores thoughts along those lines.
