Pushing Through, oil on paper. There are times when I’m painting and I just get snagged on something. With this one, somehow I block in colors and shapes in the subjects face that looked completely off. Fortunately, I didn’t get too in my feelings about it, bypassed frustration, and just let myself work through it. The mindset was “I’ll just push the paint around more and see where it goes.” Eventually, things did settle where they needed to - I was able to push through that awkward portrait phase and ended up with a result I really like. Getting myself back into the right state of mind really helped. Do your paintings sometimes drift into a weird state like that?

Looking back at this one, which is from a couple of months ago, I really like how it turned out. The lighting works well, I think. I've also connected it to a longer walkthrough video, which gives a slower version of this process in action.
