To examine the working logic of Switches in a computer network:

Step 1: First of all, if you have not installed and configured the GNS3 network simulator program on your computer before, please refer to our video tutorial below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IL_iL0lgRqU

Step 2: After installation, run the program, and create a new project.

Step 3: Add one L2 Switch and two VPCS to the work environment and make their connections.

Step 4: Define an IP address block for VPCS, and then assign an IP address for PC1 and PC2.

Step 5: Now, use the show mac-address table command at the CLI command prompt on the switch to view the mac addresses of the computers it is connected to.

Step 6: The MAC table may be empty because no data traffic has yet been made between PC1 and PC2. At this point, right-click on the network cable between the switch and PC1 / click on start capture.

Step 7: In the window that opens, you can see in the file name section on which network cable the packages will be analyzed. Click the arrow button and start the analysis.

Step 8: After opening the Wireshark program, ping PC2 through PC1. During the ping process, the #ARP protocol will immediately kick in and learn the addresses of the computers on the network. Immediately afterward, the ICMP protocol will be activated to send ping packets.

Step 9: When you view the #MAC table on the #switch again, you can see that PC1 and PC2 connected to it have saved their MAC addresses in their table.

Step 10: You can use the clear mac address-table dynamic command to clear the MAC table on the switch.

Step 11: Do not forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more videos on networking training with GNS3!
