First things first, you will need to make a Forge server in 1.20.4. We have a complete guide on how to do this in the description above. It covers absolutely everything that you need to know in order to get mods on a Minecraft server using Forge. From downloading the Forge server files to setting up the Forge server to even how to make sure you and your friends can join your modded Minecraft server, that video has everything in it.
From there, we can move on to how to install mods on your Minecraft server, and that actually starts off with downloading mods for 1.20.4. Typically, any Minecraft mod will work on your server. Occasionally some Minecraft mods are “local only” and will not work on a server.
When downloading mods for your server, make sure they are for the Forge mod loader and version 1.20.4 of Minecraft. That will ensure that they work on the server as you are using a Forge 1.20.4 server to play modded Minecraft.
After your mods are downloaded, we can move on to how to add mods to a Minecraft server in 1.20.4. This is actually really easy. Just take the mods that you downloaded and go into your server folder/directory. This is where your file to start your server is and all the other files associated with your modded Minecraft server. There, you will have a mods folder. Open this folder and add any mods you want to install on the server into this mods folder. When you do that, you are done on the server as far as adding mods goes.
However, you will also need to install every single mod that is on the server into your local mods folder as well. This is a requirement for modded Minecraft to work. Every person who joins the server will need the mods installed locally on their computer in their local mods folder as well.
Once Forge is setup, open the Minecraft launcher and navigate to the “Installations” tab. Then, hover over the Forge 1.20.4 installation and click the folder icon that appears. Your Minecraft folder will open. In this folder, you should have a mods folder. Open that and add every mod that is on the server to this mods folder as well. After that, play Minecraft with your Forge installation.
With the mods added to the server and installed locally, start the server and you can join it! Your Minecraft mods will be active, and you can start playing modded Minecraft with your friends.
