Truthfully, this is the complete guide to how to OP someone in a Minecraft server, so let’s jump right on into it!
First things first, you will need to have access to the Minecraft server’s console in order to OP the first player on a server. Once a player is OP’d, they can OP other players in-game, but the first player to get OP’d on a Minecraft server must be given operator from the server’s console.
It is also important to note that when a user is given OP on a Minecraft server, they have full admin permissions allow them to use any command they want on the server. This includes things like /gamemode creative, /enchant, give other users operator, /ban users and use the /stop command. In truth, any players that have OP on a Minecraft server can access any commands, so don’t give anyone OP on a Minecraft server. Only people you trust.
From there, we can move on to how to actually get operator in Minecraft. Start off by accessing the server’s console. Then, in the server’s console, type the command “op USERNAME” replacing the username with the username of the player you want to give operator permissions to. You can do this for as many players as you want.
However, once you have OP on your server, you can use the /op USERNAME permission in-game to give additional users operator on the server. This means that once you are OP yourself one time you will no longer need to access the server console to OP new players.
As we’ve mentioned though, you don’t want to give everyone admin permissions on the server, so you want want to remove OP from a player, the command “/deop USERNAME” can be used. This can also be executed from the server’s console if you no longer have OP permissions on the server. It is possible for other players on the server who have OP to remove OP from your account, so keep that in-mind as well when giving player operator.
Lastly, it is worth noting to see everyone who has OP on your server, you can access the “ops.json” file located in the main server directory. If you open this with a text editor, you will be able to see all of the players that have operator on your server. If you see a user that shouldn’t have OP, this file can be edited. Deleting the file and restarting the server will result in everyone who had OP losing it. You can then readd everyone you want to have OP using the /op username command.
