How to Change Audio Format on PS5 Sound Settings (Linear PCM, Dolby)
Setting the correct audio format on your PS5 is essential for getting the best sound quality from your specific audio setup, whether you're using a TV, soundbar, or a full home theater system. The three main options are Linear PCM, Dolby, and DTS.
The Best Method: Changing the Audio Format
From the PS5 home screen, go to Settings (the gear icon ⚙ ️ ) in the top-right corner.
Select Sound.
Choose Audio Output.
Scroll down to General and select Audio Format (Priority).
You will be given the following options:
Linear PCM: This is the default and often the best option for most setups. Linear PCM is an uncompressed, high-quality audio format that sends the raw audio data directly from your PS5 to your audio device. It has no latency and is considered the purest form of audio.
Dolby: This is a compressed audio format that is compatible with a wide range of devices, especially older soundbars and receivers that might not support Linear PCM. It's also required if you want to use Dolby Atmos, which is now supported on the PS5.
DTS: Similar to Dolby, DTS is another compressed audio format. It is a good choice for systems that are specifically configured to handle DTS audio.
