Facebook Messenger is a great way to stay in touch with friends and family. However, because all Facebook Messenger conversations have the same look and feel, if you have a lot of active conversations going it can be easy to send someone the wrong message. One way to prevent this from happening is to change the Facebook Messenger background color for individual conversations to something other than the default blue. The background color will change for everyone in the conversation. All of your other Facebook Messenger conversations will still use the default blue background unless you, or someone else, changes them. In this video I'll show you how to change the Facebook Messenger background theme in the Facebook Messenger app for iPhone, iPad and Android devices, and also on Messenger.com.

First, let's walk through how to change your Facebook Messenger background color in the Facebook Messenger app for iPhone, iPad, and Android.

Step 1. Launch the Facebook Messenger app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device. You'll land on your Facebook Messenger home screen.

Step 2. Tap the conversation you want to change the Facebook Messenger background color for. That conversation thread appears on your screen.

Step 3. Tap either the group name or the name of the person you're having a conversation with at the top of the conversation window. A screen appears presenting options for that specific conversation.

Step 4. Tap "Color." A Customize Your Chat window flies up from the bottom of the screen.

Step 5. Tap the color option you want to use as the new background theme for this specific Facebook Messenger conversation. In this example, I'll switch from the traditional Facebook Messenger blue to orange. The window will close after you make your selection and you'll return to the screen presenting options for customizing your Facebook Messenger chat.

Step 6. Tap the "Back" arrow in the upper left corner of the screen to navigate back to your conversation, where you'll see the Facebook Messenger background color has been changed. This will change the background theme for everyone else in this conversation as well. Remember that only this conversation will be changed, and all of your other Facebook Messenger conversations will still use the default blue background color.

Now let's walk through how to change the Facebook Messenger theme on Messenger.com.

Step 1. Open a web browser, navigate to Messenger.com, and then log into your account if prompted. You'll arrive at your Facebook Messenger home page.

Step 2. Click to select the conversation you want to change the background theme for.

Step 3. Click "Change Color" in the menu on the right side of the screen. A Pick a Color for this Conversation window appears.

Step 4. Click to select the new color you want to use as the background theme for this specific conversation. In this example, I'll choose pink. Your chosen color will be instantly applied to that specific conversation, and will also be changed for everyone else in that conversation.
