How to Fix 120 FPS Not Working on PS5 (Hidden 120hz)
If 120 FPS isn’t working on your PS5 despite setting it up, there are several common issues and fixes to try. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:
1. Verify Hardware Compatibility
Check Your Display: Ensure your TV or monitor supports 120Hz and has an HDMI 2.1 port. Look up its specs online or in the manual—some older “120Hz” TVs don’t support it over HDMI.
Use the Right Cable: Confirm you’re using the HDMI 2.1 cable included with your PS5. Older HDMI cables like 2.0 cap at 60 FPS for 4K or may not support 120Hz at all.
Correct HDMI Port: Plug into an HDMI 2.1 port on your display, often labeled “HDMI 2.1” or “4K 120Hz”. Some TVs have only one compatible port.
2. Double-Check PS5 Settings
Enable 120Hz Output:
Go to Settings, Screen and Video, Video Output.
Set 120 Hz Output to Automatic.
Check Video Output Information to confirm your display supports 120Hz. If it says 60Hz max, the issue is with your display or cable.
Switch to Performance Mode:
Go to Settings, Saved Data and Game/App Settings, Game Presets.
Set Performance Mode or Resolution Mode to Performance Mode. Some games won’t hit 120 FPS in Resolution Mode.
Restart the PS5: After changing settings, power off the console fully, not rest mode, and turn it back on.
3. Confirm Game Support
Not all games support 120 FPS. Check the game’s official website or documentation, for example, Call of Duty: Warzone supports it, but Horizon Forbidden West doesn’t.
In-game settings: Open the game’s video or graphics menu and look for a 120 FPS Mode or Performance toggle. Turn it on if available—some games require this step even with console settings correct.
4. Troubleshoot Display Issues
Flickering or Black Screen:
Go to Settings, Screen and Video, Video Output, 4K Video Transfer Rate.
Lower it to -1 or -2. This reduces bandwidth demands and can fix compatibility issues with some TVs.
Refresh Rate Mismatch: Ensure your TV isn’t overriding the PS5’s output. On your TV’s settings, disable any “Game Mode” or “Auto Low Latency Mode” adjustments that force 60Hz.
Test Another Display: If possible, connect your PS5 to a different 120Hz-capable screen to rule out a display-specific problem.
5. Update Everything
PS5 System Software: Go to Settings, System, System Software, System Software Update and Settings, Update System Software. An outdated system might glitch with 120 FPS.
Game Updates: From the home screen, highlight the game, press Options, and select Check for Update. Patches often fix performance bugs.
TV Firmware: Check your TV manufacturer’s website for firmware updates—some displays need them to handle 120Hz properly.
6. Test and Reset if Needed
Test with a Known 120 FPS Game: Try a game like Fortnite or Rocket League with 120 FPS enabled in their settings to see if the issue is game-specific.
Reset Video Settings: If all else fails, go to Settings, Screen and Video, Reset Options, Reset Default Settings. Reconfigure 120Hz and Performance Mode afterward.
