How to Fix Buttons & Joystick Not Working on Steam Deck Games (But Works in Menu)

If the buttons on your Steam Deck controller aren't working, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially fix the issue:

1. Restart the Steam Deck
Sometimes a simple restart can resolve software glitches.
Hold the power button and select "Restart" from the menu.
2. Check for System Updates

Ensure your Steam Deck is running the latest version of SteamOS:
Press the Steam button.
Navigate to Settings - System - Check for Updates.
If an update is available, download and install it.

3. Calibrate Controller in Steam Settings
Calibrate the controller to ensure the inputs are being properly registered:
Press the Steam button.
Go to Settings - Controller - Calibrate and Test Input.
Follow the on-screen instructions to recalibrate the controller.

4. Reconfigure Controller Settings
Try reconfiguring the controller layout in Steam:
Press the Steam button.
Navigate to Controller Settings.
Select the appropriate layout for your game or software. You can try resetting to the default configuration as well.

5. Disconnect and Reconnect the Controller
If you’re using an external controller, disconnect it and then reconnect:
Go to Settings - Controller - Bluetooth/Wired Devices.
Disconnect and reconnect, then see if the buttons work.
6. Check Game-Specific Controller Settings

Some games may have custom controller configurations. Make sure the game's controller settings are correctly configured:
Press Steam button - Go to Library - Select your game.
In the game settings, verify the control mappings.

7. Perform a Soft Reset
Performing a soft reset of the controller can resolve many issues:
Hold the power button for 12 seconds to force a shutdown.
Power the Steam Deck back on.

8. Factory Reset (Last Resort)
If none of the above works, you may want to consider resetting your Steam Deck to factory settings. This should be your last resort as it will erase all data:

Press the Steam button - Settings - System- Factory Reset.
