How to Fix File System is unsupported on USB Drive for PS5 Console (Format exFAT)
If your PS5 console displays the "File system is unsupported" error when you plug in a USB drive, it means the drive is formatted with a file system that the PS5 doesn't recognize. The PS5 only supports exFAT and FAT32 for general use (like transferring media and game saves) and requires exFAT for extended storage of PS4 games. NTFS, a common file system for Windows PCs, is not supported.
The best way to fix this is to reformat your USB drive to exFAT using a computer.
Important Warning:
Formatting will erase all data on the USB drive. Before you begin, be sure to back up any files you want to keep.
Method 1: On a Windows PC (The Easiest Way)
This is the most common and user-friendly method for Windows users.
Connect your USB drive to a USB port on your PC.
Open File Explorer by pressing the Windows Key + E on your keyboard.
In the left-hand menu, click on "This PC" to see your list of drives.
Right-click on your USB drive and select "Format...".
In the format window, under "File system," select "exFAT".
(Optional) You can give the drive a new name under "Volume label."
Make sure "Quick Format" is checked.
Click "Start" to begin the formatting process. A warning will appear; click "OK" to confirm that you understand the data will be erased.
Wait for the process to complete, which should only take a few moments.
