How to Fix No Sound with Capture Card in OBS (Add Capture Card)
If your capture card isn’t producing sound in OBS, the issue may stem from settings in OBS, the capture card, or your audio configuration. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and fix the problem:
1. Check Capture Card Connections
Ensure the HDMI or other input cable is securely connected to both the source device (e.g., console, camera) and the capture card.
Confirm that the capture card is properly connected to your PC.
2. Verify Audio Settings in OBS
a. Add the Capture Card as an Audio Source:
Go to the Sources panel and select your capture card source.
Right-click and select Properties.
Ensure Audio Output Mode is set to Capture Audio Only or Output Desktop Audio (DirectSound).
b. Check Audio Monitoring:
In the Audio Mixer, locate your capture card’s audio.
Click the gear icon and select Advanced Audio Properties.
Set Audio Monitoring to:
Monitor and Output: Hear the audio through your speakers/headphones and output it to your stream/recording.
Monitor Off: If you only want it in the stream/recording.
3. Confirm System Audio Configuration
a. Set Default Playback Device:
Ensure your PC’s default audio device matches your desired output (e.g., speakers or headphones).
On Windows: Right-click the speaker icon - Sounds - Playback tab.
b. Enable Audio Input from the Capture Card:
On Windows:
Right-click the speaker icon and select Sounds.
Go to the Recording tab.
Find your capture card (e.g., Elgato, AVerMedia), right-click, and select Enable.
4. Check Capture Card Software
Open your capture card’s proprietary software to confirm it’s receiving audio.
If audio works in the proprietary software but not in OBS, the issue is likely OBS-related.
5. Adjust Capture Card Settings
a. Match Audio Formats:
Go to Sources - Properties for your capture card in OBS.
Ensure the audio sample rate matches your source device (44.1 kHz or 48 kHz).
b. Update Drivers and Firmware:
Visit the manufacturer’s website to download the latest drivers and firmware for your capture card.
6. Test with a Different Source or Device
Connect a different HDMI source (e.g., another console, PC, or camera) to test if the issue is with the capture card or the original source.
7. Update OBS
Ensure you’re using the latest version of OBS Studio to avoid compatibility issues.
8. Enable Audio Devices in OBS Settings
Go to Settings - Audio.
Under Global Audio Devices, make sure a device is selected for Desktop Audio and Mic/Auxiliary Audio.
9. Check HDMI Audio Output Settings
On your source device, ensure HDMI audio is enabled and set as the output format:
Consoles: Check the sound settings for output format (e.g., PCM for uncompressed audio).
10. Reset OBS Configuration
If none of the above work, resetting OBS settings to default may resolve hidden misconfigurations:
File - Settings - Profile- Duplicate (Backup), then reset OBS.
