How to Get & Use Happy Ghast in Minecraft (Easy Method)
The Happy Ghast is a new, friendly mob introduced in Minecraft as part of the second game drop of 2025, available for testing in Bedrock Preview 1.21.80.25 and Java Snapshot 25w15a as of April 2025. It’s a rideable, passive variant of the Ghast that can carry up to four players and serve as a floating platform for building. Here’s how to get and use it in Minecraft Java or Bedrock Edition on PC:
How to Get a Happy Ghast
Enable Experimental Features:
For Java Edition: In the Minecraft Launcher, enable snapshots under the Installations tab, select the latest snapshot (e.g., 25w15a), and enable the "Drop 2 2025" experimental toggle when creating a new world.
For Bedrock Edition: Use Minecraft Preview, accessible via the Minecraft Launcher or Microsoft Store. Enable the "Drop 2 2025" experimental toggle in the Experiments tab of world settings.
Find or Craft a Dried Ghast Block:
Find in the Nether: Head to the Soul Sand Valley biome in the Nether. Look for Dried Ghast blocks near bone structures or Nether fossils. These blocks look like small, frowning grey skulls and can be mined by hand.
Craft a Dried Ghast Block: If you don’t want to search, craft one using 4 Ghast Tears and 5 Bone Blocks (some sources suggest 8 Ghast Tears and 1 Bone Block, but the official recipe from Mojang uses 4 and 5). Place them in a crafting table as follows:
Top row: Ghast Tear, Ghast Tear, Ghast Tear
Middle row: Ghast Tear, Bone Block, Bone Block
Bottom row: Bone Block, Bone Block, Bone Block
Transform the Dried Ghast into a Ghastling:
Bring the Dried Ghast block to the Overworld via a Nether Portal.
Submerge it in water by placing a water bucket on the same block or surrounding it with water. You can use fences or blocks to contain the water if needed.
Wait approximately 20 minutes in real-time. The Dried Ghast’s expression will change from sad to neutral to happy, and it will transform into a Ghastling, the baby form of the Happy Ghast.
Grow the Ghastling into a Happy Ghast:
The Ghastling will take another 20 minutes to grow into a full Happy Ghast.
To speed up the process, feed the Ghastling snowballs. The more snowballs you give it, the faster it grows. Snowballs can be crafted with 4 snow blocks in a crafting table, yielding 16 snowballs.
How to Use a Happy Ghast
Craft a Harness:
To ride the Happy Ghast, craft a harness using 3 Leather, 2 Glass Blocks, and 1 Wool Block of any color. The wool color determines the harness’s color.
Crafting recipe:
Top row: Empty, Wool, Empty
Middle row: Glass, Leather, Glass
Bottom row: Leather, Empty, Leather
Equip the Harness:
Hold the harness and right-click (or interact) with the Happy Ghast to equip it. When equipped, the Happy Ghast’s goggles will lower over its eyes, indicating it’s ready to be ridden.
Ride the Happy Ghast:
Right-click the Happy Ghast to mount it. Up to four players can ride at once, with the first player controlling movement using standard WASD and jump controls.
The Happy Ghast flies slower than an Elytra but allows smooth, stable flight in any direction, including vertically. It doesn’t require fireworks like an Elytra.
To dismount, press the sneak key (Shift by default). You’ll land on top of the Happy Ghast, which acts as a solid platform.
Use as a Floating Platform:
When not being ridden, the Happy Ghast remains stationary if players are standing on it. You can build on its head, making it ideal for constructing sky bases or tall structures in Survival mode.
Note: You cannot place blocks directly on the Happy Ghast to start building; you can only build while standing on it.
Speed Boost Trick (Optional):
Happy Ghasts are slow by default, but you can increase their speed using a quirky trick involving pigs.
Craft leads (4 String + 1 Slimeball) and leash 3-4 pigs. While riding the Happy Ghast, hold the leashed pigs in front of it and fly backward. The pigs will bump into the Ghast, causing a micro-boost due to Minecraft’s entity collision mechanics. The more pigs, the better the boost.
