How To Hack & Modify A RODE VideoMicro Into An Omnidirectional Video Vlogging Mic - Guide & Example using a Primo EM172 omni condenser ECM mic capsule.
In this video I'm showing how to hack, convert, modify a RODE VideoMicro from a cardioid polar pattern to omnidirectional pickup patter. Basically turning a cardioid condenser video mic into an omnidirectional video microphone.
For this video I'm using my GoPro Hero 8 Black, so anyone who has a GoPro Hero 8 Black with either the Media Mod or the GoPro Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter can hear exactly how a GoPro Hero 8 Black sounds with an external omnidirectional vlogging mic.
While an omnidirectional microphone isn't best suited to locations where you've got a lot of other noises, as is demonstrated for the start of the video by the busy road and all the traffic. Once in an environment that's got less distracting noises, an omni mic can sound great, as can be heard once I'm in the park.
As for using an omni as an omnidirection video mic or a omnidirectional vlogging mic, there are a number of advantages comapared to a cardioid. An omni mic is less susceptible to wind distortion, they can also have a more richer and fuller tone and because they pickup from all directions they can give a good sense of the atmosphere and environment that you are in.
My opinion is that the RODE VideoMicro is one of the best vlogging mics out there and it also sounds great once it has been converted to an omnidirectional microphone with the Primo EM172 omnidirectional condenser capsule.
When you factor into the equation that you can pick up a RODE VideoMicro for £37 on Amazon, a Primo EM172 for less than £12 at Micbooster and the foam filter for about £1. You're talking about £50 for a high quality omni video mic that sounds great and has a very low noise floor. I have a few VideoMicros but I would totally recommend having two, one unmodified and one with the omnidirectional mic hack. This will give you two great vlogging mic options, one cardiod and one omni.
It goes without saying that you'll invalidate your RODE VideoMicro warranty doing this.
I'm also in the process of modifying the DeadCat on the RODE VideoMicro into something that's similar to a traditional blimp system, I'll post my results and how to guide once it's done. And as mentioned in the video, I'll post my results and how to guide on the on camera stereo video microphone that I'm building with the two Primo EM172 capsules.
BTW. I made a mistake in the guide, I called the cable a TRRS one when it was in fact a TRS cable. This has no effect on the build as both cable types use tip as live, which is what I tested to see what the live cable was on the Micro's capsule.
