How To Connect An XLR Microphone To A GoPro - Hero 8 Black & Phantom Power Pre-amp & GoPro Media Mod
In this video I'm showing how to connect an external XLR microphone to a GoPro Hero 8 Black and specifically for this particular example I'm using a professional large diaphragm condenser microphone.
For this particular workflow I'm using a pre-amp or preamplifier to connect the XLR mic to the GoPro. The pre-amp that I'm using is the Saramonic Smartrig, which is also capable of providing 48V phantom power to the condenser microphone.
You could use any XLR preamp for doing this and the workflow would be exactly the same.
The first thing to do is to put the GoPro into line level. This is very important as it will bypass the Media Mod's own mic pramp and therefore also bypass the AGC and limiting that the GoPro and Media Mod will inevitably apply to any mic signal when set to any of the mic modes, standard mic, mic plus and the powered modes. This exact workflow is identical if using the GoPro Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter instead of the Media Mod.
You then plug your XLR mic into the Smartrig via an XLR cable, or whatever preamp you are using. Then connect the output of your preamp to your GoPro's 3.5mm jack input, depending on your preamp this may be an XLR to 3.5mm TRS cable or quarter inch jack to 3.5mm TRS cable. If using a standard Smartrig and not a modified one like mine, you simply connect a TRRS to TRS jack adapter to the output cable of the Saramonic Smartrig. You then use the gain on the preamp to determine the optimum signal level that is sent to the GoPro.
This type of setup is ideal for using your GoPro Hero 8 Black as your camera and audio recorder in a Podcast setup or an indoor vlogging setup. You can of course use this particular preamp with your GoPro outdoors, something that I'll be showing soon.
You can also use the exact same setup with dynamic XLR microphones.
This same workflow will work for the GoPro Hero 7 Black, Hero 6 Black and Hero 5 Black if you use the original GoPro Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter with them.
Cheers,
Dave.
