Making A Mini Blimp & Deadcat System For My RODE VideoMicro My Process For Testing My Modifications
In this video I'm just going through some of my process when I'm trying to work out what does and doesn't work when I'm trying the modifications I do to microphones etc.
In this instance I'm trying to see if I can further enhance the wind rejection characteristics of the already fantastic RODE deadcat for the VideoMicro.
What I'm trying to do is to make a blimp system for the VideoMicro, basically a small version of a RODE Blimp and Dead Wombat or a Rycote Super Shield windshield Blimp, in effect a Mini Blimp or Micro Blimp.
For this I'm using the acoustic foam from within the VideoMicro's deadcat to cover the mesh ball end found on many handheld dynamic live stage mics, such as the Shure SM58. I then cover the mesh ball and acoustic foam with the deadcat fur off the Micro's deadcat and then seal it at the back.
If the final wind tests work out well I will make a video that shows the build process and go into more detail of how a blimp deadcat windjammer wind filter works.
As I said in the video, this is only the first stage to see how tone is effected. After this I will do my wind rejection tests to see if the idea works at further protecting the capsule in the RODE VideoMicro from wind distortion and interference.
It may well be that I've not understood the physics properly with such a small cavity for dead space or dead air in the Mini Blimp, but that's the whole reason for the testing, even if it fails :)
Once again I used the GoPro Hero 8 Black and the Media Mod for this test and video becuase if it does the work this could end up being the best vlogging mic for the GoPro and maybe useful to other vloggers and GoPro owners.
Let me know in the comments what you think of the idea and what you think of the tone changes.
Cheers,
Dave.
