How To Get The Best External Mic Audio From Your GoPro
In this video I'm demonstrating how to get the possible audio quality out of your GoPro Hero 8 Black. In this instance I'm using the GoPro Hero 8 with the GoPro Media Mod but this will work exactly the same way with the GoPro Hero 7 Black, GoPro Hero 6 Black and GoPro 5 Black if you use them with the GoPro Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter. This method will also work with the Hero 8 and the mic adapter as well.
The basic premise here is to use your GoPro audio input set to line level mode and not any of the microphone input modes. You will also need to use a preamplifier with phantom power and if you're using lavaliers or any ECM type microphones you'll need to convert the 48 volt phantom power to electret or plug in power, for this I'm using the RODE VXLR+
This whole setup works with any XLR microphone, be it a shotgun mic or studio condenser mic if you use a preamp with 48v phantom power. It will also work with a dynamic mic and of course work with lavalier and ECM microphones such as the RODE VieoMicro if you use the RODE VXLR+
In line level mode the GoPro wont be adding any AGC and/or limiting, basically giving you the cleanest recording you can achieve with a GoPro and a proper dynamic headroom. Once you have your recording in post you can then re-level or apply whatever dynamics processing you would like, such as limiting or compression etc.
This method will give you the best audio quality for your external vlogging mics or indeed any type of microphone for any type of audio recording, be that dialogue recording, atmos etc. You can also take advantage of the GoPro's two audio channels for either two independent mic channels or inputs for interviews etc. or for proper stereo recording. For two channel and stereo recording you will of course require a two channel preamp.
