How to install PS4 Hard Drive & Reinstall System Software (HDD to SDD)
Installing a new hard drive in your PS4 and reinstalling the system software involves a few steps. Here’s how you can do it:
Step 1: Installing the New Hard Drive
Backup Your Data:
Before you start, back up your game saves and data. Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage or transfer data to an external hard drive or USB stick via the PS4's data management options.
Gather Tools:
You'll need a Phillips-head screwdriver (preferably #1 size).
Power Down and Open the PS4:
Power off your PS4 and unplug it from the power source.
Lay the PS4 with the bottom facing up.
Remove the hard drive bay cover by sliding it off or unscrewing it if necessary (models vary).
Remove the Existing Hard Drive:
Unscrew the HDD bracket from the PS4.
Gently pull out the HDD with the bracket. Note how it's connected or take a photo for reference.
Remove the HDD from its bracket by unscrewing the four screws that hold it in place.
Install the New Hard Drive:
Secure the new hard drive into the bracket using the same screws.
Slide the HDD/SSD bracket back into the PS4's hard drive slot and screw it back into place.
Close Up:
Replace the hard drive bay cover.
Step 2: Reinstalling System Software
Prepare the System Software on a USB Drive:
Format your USB drive to FAT32 or exFAT.
Create a folder named "PS4" at the root of your USB drive, then inside that folder, create another folder named "UPDATE".
Download the latest PS4 system software from PlayStation's official website. The file should be named PS4UPDATE.PUP.
Copy this file into the "UPDATE" folder you created on the USB drive.
Enter Safe Mode:
Connect the USB drive to one of the USB ports on your PS4.
Turn off the PS4 completely.
Hold down the power button for about 7 seconds until you hear two beeps (this enters Safe Mode).
Initialize PS4:
In Safe Mode, select "Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)". This option will completely wipe the drive and install the new software.
Follow the on-screen instructions. The PS4 will search for the update file on the USB drive and begin the installation process.
Installation:
The installation can take some time. Do not turn off the PS4 or disconnect the USB drive during this process.
Setup:
After installation, the PS4 will restart. Follow the setup process, including language selection, connecting to the internet, and signing into your PlayStation Network account.
Restore Your Data:
Once you've reinstalled the system software and set up your PS4, you can restore your backed-up data from your external drive or from the cloud.
