To grab a shell in Super Mario 3D World, press and hold the Y or X button, then release the button to throw.

Bombs are exactly the same - once immobilised, press and hold the X or Y button to grab the bomb. Then, release again to throw.

If you have a suit, a problem is pressing X or Y will attack instead, hitting the shell. To avoid this, press X or Y away from the shell first, continue to hold, then approach the shell to pick it up.

This was recorded on the Wii U version of the game. Also, apologies for any flickering during this video - there was some issues with the recording which I didn't notice until the export.
