There are many ways to get infinite / unlimited lives in Super Mario 3D World - but the fastest and easiest is in World 1-2, right at the start of the game.

Play until you reach the underground area, and ground pound through the blocks to find a Koopa next to a tunnel. Grab the shell, bounce it in the tunnel, and then leap on the shell. You will then bounce over and over, quickly resulting in enough 1Ups to reach the max life limit.

This was recorded on the Wii U version of the game. Also, apologies for any flickering during this video - there was some issues with the recording which I didn't notice until the export.
