First things first, the easiest way to play multiplayer in Minecraft is on a public server. We have a list of public survival Minecraft servers in the description above. However, the most popular public server is Hypixel.
No matter what public server you want to join, you will need the IP address of the server in order to play Minecraft with friends on it. Most servers make this really easy to find, and once you have the IP, open Minecraft and navigate to the “Multiplayer” screen by clicking the “Multiplayer” button on the main menu.
Then, click “Add Server” in the bottom of Minecraft. You can name the server anything you want, and then in the “Server Address” section, add the IP address for the server. Click done, and the server will be in your multiplayer menu. Double-click on it to join. Your friends will also need to do this. From there, you and your friends can find each other and starting playing Minecraft together.
There are some limitations of public Minecraft servers though. Mainly, you don't control the server, and it can be shutdown or changed at anytime. This is where playing with your friends by creating your own Minecraft server comes in.

There is one more way to play Minecraft Java Edition with your friends - using a LAN world. There are limitations to using a LAN world though. You are your friends need to both be playing Minecraft on the same internet connection meaning you will most likely need to be at the same location
From there, go into Minecraft singleplayer, and hit escape. Then, click the “Open To LAN” button. Set your LAN world settings, and click the “Start LAN World” button. Your Minecraft singleplayer world is now joinable via LAN.
For your friends to join your LAN world, they will just open Minecraft Java Edition, click on “Multiplayer” and wait a few seconds. Your LAN world will appear, and they will be able to join it.
