About this video: When a new Minecraft version is released, everyone wants to know how to update their Minecraft server. Well, this truly is the complete guide to updating your MInecraft server as we cover how to update a modded Minecraft server, how to update a vanilla Minecraft server, and how to update a Minecraft server with plugins. So, here is how to update your Minecraft server without losing your world!

First, no matter what kind of Minecraft server you are updating, you will need to back your server up before you update. By backing up your Minecraft server, you ensure that no matter what, your data will be safe if something goes wrong in the backup. This means it is impossible to lose your world when updating a Minecraft server as you always have a backup you can restore your server to.

To create a backup on your server, just right-click on it, select “Send to” and “Compressed zip file”. This will create a zip file with your server contents that can be unzipped if you need to back it up.

With that out of the way, updating a vanilla Minecraft server is easy. Just download the new Minecraft server version from the link in the description above. Then, from there, delete the server.jar from your server. Add in the new, updated server.jar you downloaded into the server. Start your server like you normally would, and your server will be on the new Minecraft version!

From there, let’s take a look at modded Minecraft servers. Generally, we wouldn’t recommend updating modded Minecraft servers. This is because it is extremely common for modded Minecraft servers to corrupt or have issues during updates. If you do decide to update your Minecraft server with mods, make sure to back it up.

Once you have backed up your modded server, you will need to download the Minecraft Forge version you want as well as the updated versions of every single mod on your Minecraft server. Then, create a new Forge server using the mod system installer for Forge. Finally, move over all the files from your old server to the new server except the run.bat, run.sh, jvm_arguments file, and the libraries folder. All other files and folders can be moved over.

Then, delete the mods on your server and add in all of the updated versions for all of your mods. Finally, start your server. You will also need to update your local version of Forge and replace all of the mods in your local mods folder before you will be able to join your updated modded Minecraft server.

Lastly, let’s take a look at Minecraft servers with plugins. For these servers, you will want to download the updated version of Paper or PurPur. Then, you will also want to get all of the updated versions of all of your Minecraft plug-ins.

From there, replace the paper or purpur .jar file in your server with the updated version of Paper or PurPur. You will also want to rename the file to what your old .jar file was called otherwise, you will need to update your run.bat or run.sh file to run the new server.jar. After that, replace your Minecraft plugins with the updated versions of every plugin. Then, start your server. Your Minecraft server with plugins is now upgraded to the new version!

And there you have it! That is how to update your Minecraft server. If you have any questions about how to update a Minecraft server with mods or update a Minecraft server with plugins, let u know in the comments. We will try our best to help you out.
