About this video: In this video, we show you how to optimize your server.properties file in order to reduce lag on your server and make sure your settings for your Minecraft server are in tip-top shape! Now, we still do recommend running your server on Paper, but these settings will improve lag for vanilla servers. They will also help you better understand what you can do with your Minecraft server. For example, if you want to force players to use a resource pack on your server or enable whitelist from the first time your server is started, you can do that with the server.properties file.
Now, while we do go over the main things you will need to configure in your server.properties, there are some things most people won’t ever need to touch. For these, we have a link in the description above that will give you more information on the less used settings and what they do.
First things first, let’s talk about the spawn-protection setting. This is the radius around your spawn block that is protected. Blocks can’t be broken in this area. After that, we have allow-nether. This one is pretty self-explanatory. Do you want to have the nether on your server? If yes, leave this enabled.
There is also the gamemode and force-gamemode settings in the Minecraft server.properties. The gamemode settings is what gamemode you want players to be in when they join. For example, creative, survival, spectator, or adventure. Then, force-gamemode is whether or not you want players forced into this gamemode everytime they join or not.
The max-players setting is also a setting you may want to change. The higher this number the more players you can have on your server at the same time. After that, we have the pvp settings which if false, will make pvp not possible on your server. Change pvp to true if you want to allow pvp on your Minecraft server. From there, look at all of the resource pack settings. These will allow you to add a recommend resource pack to your server and even let you force players to use it.
There is also the level-seed which is where you can enter in a new seed for your server. For this to work though, you will need to reset your Minecraft server’s world. Thus, it is best to do this when the server is first created. You also have the motd setting. Here you can change your Minecraft server’s Message of The Day. This is what is shown to players on the Minecraft multiplayer screen before they join the server.
The whitelist option is also important as this setting will let you turn on and off whitelist thus making your server public and private. You can also force whitelist which will kick players from the server if they are online and you enable whitelist assuming those players are not whitelisted.
Lastly, the server-ip and server-port are the IP address and port for your server. This is good to know just in case you need to change either at any time.
As mentioned above, there are a lot of other settings for your server.properties. Some are outlined in the video, but others are not and more information on those can be found at the link above.
Thank you for watching! If we did help you learn how to configure your server.properties file, please give this video a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel if you haven’t already. It really helps us out, and it means a ton to me. Thanks in advance!
