About this video: If you are struggling with lag on your Minecraft server, it could be a million different things. However, there is one place that is worth looking first - your view distance. The view distance in your Minecraft server settings is similar to the render distance in your Minecraft video settings. It controls how many chunks players can see around them. Because of this, it can be a big point of lag for your Minecraft server. The higher the view distance, the more chunks that are being loaded by the server. The more chunks that are loaded, the more lag there will be. So without anymore delay, here is how to change your view distance on your Minecraft server!
First things first, you will need a Minecraft server. I’m assuming most people watching this video already have one, but if you don’t, you can find our in-depth tutorial on how to start a Minecraft server using Paper in the description above. Paper is the best Minecraft server software you can use.
After you have your server, you will have a file in your main server directory. This file is called ‘server.properties’. Go ahead and open up this file with your favorite text editor. Once you have the file open, navigate to the ‘view-distance=’ setting. As you can image, this is where you can update your view distance for your server. By default, this will be set to 10. Honestly, I wouldn’t ever recommend going over a 10 view distance. Lowering your view distance can be a good idea though. Here is what we would recommend.
For servers with under 20 players, you are pretty safe to leave the view distance at 10 if you are have decent, modern hardware. However, once you pass over 20 players, you will most likely start to notice some lag at this render distance. At that point, we suggest dropping down to a 8 render distance. You can keep an 8 render distance until about 50 players depending on your hardware. Over 50 players though, it is pretty much guaranteed that you will need to drop down to a 6 render distance. For survival servers, 6 render distance is as low as we recommend going. SkyBlock servers though can be dropped all the way down to 4 without much of any negative effect.
Change the number next to the ‘view-distance:’ setting to any of the above settings, and don’t be afraid to go lower if you are lagging. For example, if you are lagging with less than 20 players, go ahead and drop the view distance to 8. It may solve your lag problems.
So there you have it! That is our complete guide on how to change your view distance on a Minecraft server.
