About this video: If you want to know how to make a Minecraft server in 2021, this is the video for you! Making a Minecraft server for Java Edition has been one of the more difficult things to do in the past, but in this video, we try to make hosting your own Minecraft server easy breaking down every step and giving you articles to look at if you have any troubles with specific parts. So without anymore delay, here is how to host your own Minecraft server.
The first step of starting your own Minecraft Java Edition server in 2021 is downloading the server files. You can find the server files linked in the description above. When you click that link, it will actually take you to the text tutorial for how to make a Minecraft server for the most recent version. If you are watching this video in the future, this article will always have how to make a server in the most recent version of Minecraft. Thus, if there are changes, the article on our website will always be up-to-date to reflect those.
Once you are on our site, scroll down and click the ‘Download Minecraft’ button. This will take you to the Minecraft server file download page. On this page, you will see a green link that says Download ‘minecraft_server.VERSION.jar’. The version will be different depending on when you are watching this tutorial. Click this link, and the Minecraft Java Edition server.jar file will start downloading. You will need to keep or save the file depending on your browser. It is 100% safe.
After the file is downloaded, create a folder on your desktop and name it ‘Minecraft Server’. Drag-and-drop the server.jar you downloaded into this folder. Then, right-click and create a new text document. Name this document ‘run’. Open the run.txt file, and copy-and-paste the ‘Run.bat Text’ in the description above into the text file you created. Save the file, and right-click on the run.txt file and rename it to run.bat. Confirm that you are changing the file type. Finally, double click on the new run.bat file.
When you click that file, your server will try to start, but it will fail. You will have had some files generate though. One of these will be the eula.txt file. Open this file, and change EULA=false to EULA=true and save the file. Double click the run.bat file again, and your Minecraft server will start!
At this point, you can join your server by opening up Minecraft and entering ‘localhost’ as your IP address and join the server. Now, this is not how your friends will join. To play on your Minecraft server with your friends, you will need to port forward. We have a complete guide on port forwarding for a Minecraft server in the description above. We also have other helpful links for your server in the description above, so be sure to check those.
