How to Show File Extensions in Mac OS X
Making file name extensions visible on the Mac is a matter of toggling a setting option in Finder preferences. This is the same in all versions of OS X. Read the accompanying walkthrough here:

You'll notice in this video there is a delay in OS X Yosemite with showing the filename extensions after the setting has been toggled. Often this can be expedited to immediately show the filename extensions by simply toggling the setting again, as seen in the video. Typically that is not required in other versions of Mac OS X, however.
