Accessing and typing the Emoji character icons on a Mac with OS X is really easy. As long as you can enter text into an app, you can probably type Emoji into that app, just go to the "Edit" menu and choose "Emoji & Symbols" (it's labeled as Special Characters in prior versions of OS X to Yosemite).

Emoji character icons were first introduced to OS X in Lion, and support for Emoji has carried forward in OS X Mountain Lion, OS X Mavericks, and OS X Yosemite. Accessing the emoji icons is the same in all versions as is typing the characters. Have fun, and yes these Emoji icons typed on a Mac can be read and seen on an iPhone or iPad!
