How to Turn On Generic Controller Support on STEAM if Controllers Don't Work (Best Method)
If your controller isn't an official Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch controller, you'll need to enable Generic Gamepad Configuration Support within Steam. This feature allows Steam to recognize and map the buttons of a wide range of third-party controllers.
The Best Method: Using Steam's Controller Settings
Connect your controller to your PC via a USB cable or a wireless adapter.
Open Steam, then click "Steam" in the top-left corner and select "Settings".
In the Settings window, go to the "Controller" tab on the left.
Click the "GENERAL CONTROLLER SETTINGS" button. This will open a new, full-screen window.
In the "General Controller Settings" window, check the box next to "Generic Gamepad Configuration Support." This will tell Steam to detect and allow configuration for any unlisted controllers.
Once you check the box, a new pop-up will appear. You will need to map your controller's buttons to a standard layout (e.g., A, B, X, Y, sticks, and triggers). Follow the on-screen instructions to press each button as prompted.
