How to Update your Elite Controller on Xbox Series X (Settings Tutorial)
To update your Xbox Elite Controller on the Xbox Series X, you have a few options. Let’s walk through them:
Wireless Update:
If your Elite Controller has a 3.5-mm port on the bottom (most do), you can update it wirelessly without connecting a USB cable.
Here’s how:
Plug in your stereo headset adapter (if you have one) to the bottom of your controller.
Make sure a headset is plugged into the adapter (it needs to be plugged in for the adapter to turn on).
Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
Go to Profile & system - Settings - Devices & connections - Controllers & headsets.
Select the controller you want to update.
On the Xbox Wireless Controller screen, select the three dots (“…”) to check the firmware version for your controller.
If it says “Update,” follow the provided steps to apply the update.
Keep in mind:
If you plugged in the stereo headset adapter during a system update or while the console was off, the auto-detect feature might not work immediately. To fix this, unplug the adapter and then plug it back in.
You only need to update your controller once to use the stereo headset adapter. If you plan to use the adapter with other Xbox controllers, repeat this process for each controller.
Check for new updates periodically, as Xbox frequently ships new controller features and improvements.
USB Update:
If you prefer a wired update, follow these steps:
Plug the stereo headset adapter into the bottom of your controller (if you have one).
Connect the included USB cable to your Xbox’s USB port:
For Xbox Series X, the port is on the front right below the Pair button.
For Xbox Series S, the port is on the front left next to the Pair button.
For Xbox One X and Xbox One S, the USB port is on the front under the Power button.
For the original Xbox One, the port is on the left side of the console, around the corner from the disc tray.
Plug the other end of the USB cable into the top of your controller.
The update instructions should automatically appear. Follow them, and don’t disconnect the USB cable during the update (which can take up to 3 minutes).
